From the Inside Flap

Arguably the greatest science fiction writer who ever lived, Isaac Asimov also possessed one of the most brilliant and original minds of our time. His accessible style and far-reaching interests in subjects ranging from science to humor to history earned him the nickname "the Great Explainer." "I. Asimov is his personal story--vivid, open, and honest--as only Asimov himself could tell it. Here is the story of the paradoxical genius who wrote of travel to the stars yet refused to fly in airplanes; who imagined alien universes and vast galacticcivilizations while staying home to write; who compulsively authored more than 470 books yet still found the time to share his ideas with some of the greatminds of our century. Here are his wide-ranging thoughts and sharp-eyed observations on everything from religion to politics, love and divorce, friendship and Hollywood, fame and mortality. Here, too, is a riveting behind-the-scenes look at the varied personalities--Campbell, Ellison, Heinlein, Clarke, del Rey, Silverberg, and others--who along with Asimov helped shape science fiction. As unique and irrepressible as the man himself, "I. Asimov is the candid memoir of an incomparable talent who entertained readers for nearly half acentury and whose work will surely endure into the future he so vividly envisioned.

Fantastic! Funny, endearing and honest! If you weren't in love with Isaac Asimov before, you will be after reading this memoir! "I Asimov" made me laugh out loud. Sometimes I cried. But it also made me think about the nature of our lives, how we live each day and how we spend those days. He often refers to his personal quirks and cowardice, but what we read in these pages are not just the fingers of a lion, but also the heart. His gift for connecting with humanity holds up a mirror to the best in us.

If you, like I, grew up reading everything by Isaac Asimov upon which you could lay your hands, then this last installment of Dr. Asimov's autobiography should be at the top of your reading list. I avidly read the first volume of his autobiography, In Memory Yet Green, and the second volume, In Joy Still Felt, finishing each of them pining for the next installment. Although this final volume is arranged differently (which I will explain below), it is a compelling memoir of not just the last years of Dr. Asimov's life, but rather a reflection on the whole of his life, his career, his friends, and his family.Still written in the Good Doctor's inimitably folksy prose, it differs from the first two volumes, which Dr. Asimov wrote strictly chronologically. This volume takes the reader on a journey of episodes in Dr. Asimov's life arranged not by when they happened, but rather with whom they happened. In that respect, it is more intimate, as if the reader is sitting with Isaac as he shares vignettes of his experience, each focused on his interactions (and the depth of meaning of those interactions) with him.The last chapter written by Dr. Asimov was completed months before his death. Nonetheless, he ended it on a note of hopefulness; if we didn't know what Isaac must have been suffering that last year, we would never know it from reading this volume. The final chapter is a reflection by Janet Asimov, his wife, but again, it does not detail the end.Nor, necessarily, would I (for one) want it to. The Good Doctor remains vicariously alive each time I reread again one of his collections of essays, novels, short stories, anthologies, annotations, etc., etc., etc.If you are not an Asimov fan, you might wonder what all the fuss is about regarding this volume. If that's the case, then perhaps this book may not be for you. However, I would suggest to any such person reading a few selections from Isaac's prodigious list of publications, especially those in which he shared some of his personal perspective and experiences--like his collections of essays from Fantasy and Science Fiction Magazine. Then, after reading a few of those, pick up this final volume of his autobiography, and it is likely that you will have found an author who will become like a dear friend. That's really what I, Asimov is like--a conversation with an old friend whom you know you will never see again. For Asimov fans, it is an emotional conversation, indeed. It is well worth the investment.

I read this book in about two weeks (compatibly with my available time) meaning that the author is correct in writing that he has the ability to keep people reading his books without too many interruptions. Having written more than 400 books on topics as different as cosmology, biology, mathematics, history, and science fiction, Asimov was surely a remarkable and unique person. Many anecdotes of his life are described with great honesty and often with a touch of humor. An important message that emerges from his autobiography is that he wrote books for fun, not money. Also, I like when he writes that he is (was) a one-man enterprise, doing everything by himself and without the help of secretaries. His contribution is not limited to science fiction, where he is well known for the Foundation series and the Robot series, but also for many books on popular science. In my opinion, the Three Laws of Robotics represent the most remarkable contribution of Isaac Asimov's extraordinary career:1) A robot may not injure a human being or, through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm.2) A robot must obey any orders given to it by human beings, except where such orders would conflict with the First Law.3) A robot must protect its own existence as long as such protection does not conflict with the First or Second Law.It is likely that these laws will play an ever important role in the development of humanoid robots and artificial intelligence.

There wasn't much new in this third "part" of Asimov's autobiography. But there didn't have to be. His writing may be straightforward and not "literary" but it nonetheless draws you on, page after page. Much of what he egotistically states could be considered the height of braggadocio. But who could fail to be entertained by writing like this: "Of course, the reader might argue that I was as stubborn in my viewpoint as they were in theirs. Yes, indeed, but I was right and they were wrong and that made the difference." Pure gold and funny as hell. He's the man!

As a fan of Asimov since I started reading SF back in the 50s, I loved this third part of his autobiography. Only last year did I sell the first two volumes at the local used-book store, somewhat sadly -- just to make some space on our shelves. With the Kindle, it was easy to buy "I, Asimov" to complete the trio. It was typical Isaac Asimov, written by a man with a large ego but who knew it and handled himself with humour and a certain amount of humility, ego or not. He knew who he was, and here allowed the reader to see himself, warts and all. There are a number of errors in the book that make it appear that it was transcribed via OCR: "Hitler" is consistently rendered as 'Hider'; "title" as 'tide, and similar foul-ups. However, they won't take away from the reading for anyone who appreciates Asimov. (They certainly would have bothered him, though, as he was highly critical of his own proflific writing output!)EDIT, September 27, 2010: I'm very pleased to state that this book has been edited for the errors noted in this earleir review of mine and reissued. Good work, publisher!
