This is a good book about WHY churches should be focusing more on children’s ministry but the title “Transforming Children into Spiritual Champions,” is very misleading. I was expecting more of the HOW but instead I got the WHY. If you are trying to convince the church to take children’s ministry more seriously, this book should do the trick. If you want to know exactly what you should be doing to help transform children, this book will leave you feeling disappointed.“Transforming Children into Spiritual Champions” is packed full of George Barna’s research, sharing eye opening statistics about children. The purpose of the book is to convince the reader that children are the most important aspect of the church. Children are the future. It is true that most churches miss the seriousness of children’s ministry. Some churches simply view children’s ministry as a baby-sitting service or as a means to reach the “more important” group of parents. Barna admitted that at one time he undervalued children’s’ ministry but he now believes it to be the most important ministry. It certainly convinced me that children’s ministry is important but I struggle to say that it is the most important. In many ways that does not seems biblical that one ministry of the church would be consider so much greater than another. This book interests me as a parent and as a children’s ministry leader. I want my children to be spiritual champions. I was hoping to feel more equipped and prepared to lead them after reading this book. Many times parents rely on the church solely to meet the spiritual needs of their children. Sometimes the church is just as guilty trying to replace the parents in meeting children’s spiritual needs. Barna challenges parents and the church to partner in ministering to children.

I enjoyed this book. It's very relevant if you are in a church or belief that the children's ministry is an afterthought or that all they do is babysit kids while parents go to the big church. This book shows the importance of the children's ministry in our world today."Many of the choices and outcomes in children's lives relate to two things...the moral and spiritual dimensions." Barna is good to show us at the start of the book the state of kids today in both world and spiritual health. He talks about how we must equip parents to help their children know Christ and become mature Christians because they are the church of tomorrow.I like the statistics. It makes it more real, and shows us the importance of training up a child, especially in today's world. They make us realize that focusing on children's ministry is critical. What I think is important, is Barna points out that it is not all on the shoulders of the children's minister but that the church can assist parents in the teaching of their children to spiritual maturity rather than replace them.I'm not sure the statement on the cover of the book that claim's children's ministry should be the primary focus of the church is completely accurate. I believe it should be one of the primary focus, alongside other ministries, and not swept aside as an afterthought.If you're looking for a book on how to's, this is not for you. I do believe it's a book that all children's ministry leaders, leaders in the church, and parents, should read to see the importance of the children's ministry. But this book will not give you steps to make your ministry better. It does talk about some general descriptions of what effective churches are doing but doesn't go into a lot of detail.The book is an easy read, fast read. I'd recommend it.

This is a great book. The author certainly gets his point across that children should be the highest priority within the church. The statistics given are alarming to say the least.This book, though presented as Why Children Should Be Your Church’s #1 Priority, does spend a good deal of time focusing on the importance of the parent, pointing out that it is the parent’s ultimate responsibility to oversee the spiritual development of their children. However, the author presents this information in order to encourage churches to work alongside parents, providing them with resources to better lead their children to spiritual maturity.The author’s intent is to help parents and church workers (staff and volunteers) see the influences upon our children, identify the spiritual needs of our children, and find ways we can begin to adjust our methods of training children in order to better aid them in their spiritual development. He begins by giving statistics that reveal the current beliefs of adults and children. Using these statistics, he makes a strong case for why children’s ministry and proactive parental involvement matter; calling parents and children’s workers to help children find vision, purpose, and passion, while developing perseverance and a biblical worldview. Though the book relies heavily upon statistics, it in no way neglects Scripture, but provides biblical references throughout.On the downside, while the author gives some great ideas on how to better organize our children’s ministries (such as adding additional workers and creating our own curriculum) he fails to list additional resources to help accomplish these tasks. The section on evaluating children is good and does provide a list of outcomes to look for based off of the Ten Commandments, the fruits of the Spirit, and the Sermon on the Mount, and provides a short list of ideas to use in developing an evaluation process, but again fails to give adequate information on how to directly go about developing an evaluation and does not provide a resource list to help.This is a great book, but in need of a resource list.
