Review

“The book is a super story of [the fall of Eben Emael], including what lead up to it and the results of the experience. It gave the German paratroop corps a feeling of near invincibility, a feeling that faded after the near debacle at Crete, but not completely as these men, while never doing a large scale drop again, were quite successful in other smaller actions during the war. It makes for a riveting story of an event for which we all know the outcome, but is told here in the sort of detail we have not often had. A great read and one that I can most highly recommend.” ―Scott Van Aken, Modeling Madness (March 2013)“Chris McNab is an impressive author, who demonstrates a clear mastery of the subject. In addition, the book is very well-written, maintaining its cohesion despite the shifting scenes of action. It is a rousing story of 'fortune favors the bold,' and is highly recommended.” ―Coast Defense Journal (Vol 27, Issue 2)“Blow-by-blow discussions of tactics and the operation's movements make this a solid addition to any military strategy holding.” ―The Midwest Book Review (May 2013)

While an extremely important part of the German invasion of the West in the 1940 campaign, the conquest of the fortress Eben Emael is easily overlooked for several reasons. The duration and number of participants of Germans vs. Allied forces were both very small. Only a few hundred men on either side and a short, quick victory by the Germans was easily over looked in the grand scheme of the blitzkrieg on the West. A relatively short, almost bloodless battle fought by shock troops against a static defense, an embarrassment to the amount of money poured into a fort that was over run in less than 24 hours are things to be swept under the rug.Author McNab does an excellent job detailing both sides strengths and weakness, the use of technology, stealth and surprise that allowed a force of less than 100 men over come 10x their number in an 'impregnable' fort. The maps, photos, all help the reader understand how this quick victory was achieved. It's not that Eben Emael was a useless fort, but rather the manner in which it was attacked that led to German success. Once this lynch pin of the Belgium fell, the rest was sure to follow, allowing an equally quick and equally shocking defeat of France.Well illustrated, concisely documented, this is an excellent choice to read about one of the most daring and successful aspects of the German Blitzkrieg during the western campaign of 1940. Certainly worthy study of special forces, highly trained to engage superior numbers and win decisive victories in a short period of time. The Fortress of Eben Emael is open to the public, is next on my list of things to see in Europe in 2018. A most helpful book in understanding the battle.

This is the greatest book that I have read in the Raid series. It looks into the defenders and the special equipment that the German soldiers used. The artwork is amazing.(I can't stop looking at the paintings) The author does a good job telling it as a story, with all actions being told in real time. The reader feels as if they are in the battle themselves.

Although the British might have coined the term "Commando", it was Germany that actually executed the first successful type of "commando raid" of World War II with the elite Fallschirmjagers! Concise history and well illustrated.

Excellent and informative. Anyone interested in airborne history needs to read this book. Well written with a good blend of technical and first person information.

Awesome book!

Super!

I was a history major at college, and now wonder why this story was never told. Because it showed how great the German military was at that time?? Eben Emael was such a tough fortress. Would another country beside Belgium have been able to defend it? This is a great read, well written. Anyone interested in WW2 should not miss it

The Osprey series is a fine way to delve into details of WWII operations that the history texts sailed past. The series also looks into details of weapons systems that are still interesting. This short book tells how the Germans overtook the foolish and wishful thinking of the Belgians who never wanted to fight. The fortress was mostly paid for by the French who were stunned when this generosity was repaid by Belgian government announcing their neutrality. Of course, the French were also fools who counted on the Maginot Line for their protection.(The Germans simply went around it). Of course, the real victims of these decisions were the lower ranks of soldiers who were expected to fight and die while the arrogant morons at the top stayed above it all.
