Overall this is a handy desktop reference, providing a general summary of current legal guidelines for creatives. It seems to have a particular bias towards writers, but most creatives should be able to get something out of it. That said, I find that Copyright Handbook, The: What Every Writer Needs to Know goes into a bit more depth on many of the same topics. That book is very specific, whereas this "Legal Guide for Writers, Artists...etc" takes a higher-level view, and goes beyond copyright, with a very helpful final chapter on "Business and Tax Matters."This "Legal Guide for Writers, Artists...etc" is written in an engaging, personal style that is easy to read. E.g., under the heading "The Creator-Agent Contract," we find the following:"Creative people ... may be very good at writing books but not very good at doing what is necessary to ensure that a book is published ..."In other words, this book is written in plain English, not legalese. It is also worth reading before one runs into possible legal trouble, to help avoid it. For that matter, in addition to this book and "The Copyright Handbook," I also recommend Navigating Legal Landmines: A Practical Guide to Business Law for Real People.Bottom line: a nice, high-level review of law as it affects writers and other creatives.

I'm a published author but I've always had questions about certain legal issues I face contract to contract and during the tax season. This guidebook explained issues I didn't realize I should be concerned with. Issues of whether one should become a company or not and what type isn't something I'd thought about before even though my agent has mentioned brand building to me.The book has 6 chapters. Each one builds upon the previous and I found it most useful to read from beginning to end first; later I can use it as a reference book. I was particularly happy that complicated legal issues were explained simply but also in context with examples. Knowing your legal rights is very important and Norwick's text made it understandable.This book is not only for writers though the bulk of information (and the law) is focused on the written word. Beside fiction authors, playwrights, screenwriters, photographers, and visual artists are included in chapter 5 about contracts. These categories of creators are mentioned from time to time in earlier chapters and many of the legal issues are the same so I recommend if you aren't a author, you still read them.

THE LEGAL GUIDE FOR WRITERS, ARTISTS AND OTHER CREATIVE PEOPLE: PROTECT YOUR WORK AND UNDERSTAND THE LAW provides a pretty good “plain English” summary of current intellectual property law. However, the area of law is not only technical, but it’s largely determined by individual case rulings (which are based on specific legal factors and facts). Thus the book is hard to understand unless you have some legal training (e.g., paralegal, law student, lawyer); and the book won’t give you answers to your specific questions about your own intellectual property rights, unless your questions have already been ruled on by the courts.The subject matter is presented in Q&A format, which makes the book difficult to use as a legal “nutshell” reference. (For instance, the four “fair use” factors of copyright law are listed under the question, “Did Congress Provide Any Guidance?”.)The summarized areas of law (see chapters 2-6) are as follows: (1) Copyright and other legal rights; (2) Libel, Privacy, Obscenity, and other possible legal risks; (3) creator’s rights in Cyberspace; (4) Contracts involving creative people; and (5) Business and Tax matters affecting creative people.

Far too many people have found out about their rights after it was too late. There's a lot of information out there, not all (or even most) accurate and there are also people who will actively take advantage. This book provides a substantive entry into creative rights knowledge. It won't, by any means, replace a lawyer or provide comprehensive knowledge. What it does is provide a necessary orientation to a broad range of issues and concerns. So often a person doesn't know what they don't know and gets in trouble for not know it. This help give basic understanding, providing just enough guidance to help ask more question and get set up right from the beginning. Really useful for those starting out or those just venturing into trying to make something of their creative efforts.

The Legal Guide for Writers, Artists and other Creative People is an excellent source of information. I have one son that is not only an artist, but he is an advisor in an art school. I have two sons who write music, and a daughter interested in writing and illustrating. I was very pleased to be able to recommend this to all of them, as an inexpensive way to protect themselves. There was a lot of it that they knew, but it is good to have a resource if you have any doubts. This is inexpensive, but filled with helpful information

This book is not overly large and doesn't answer every question you may have about the legal aspects of publishing and protecting your creative license, but it is a good place to start. It also works as a good reference point to come back to.It is written in layman's terms, which means you don't need a law degree to understand it. While you should still consult a lawyer before signing any documents, this legal guide book gives you the basics and helps you ask the important questions when consulting a professional.

This is an excellent guide in assisting creative types in viewing the legal implications before sharing creative work.The bok is well organized and bold headings assist users in locating the most relevant information. While I don't anticipate that many will read this cover-to-cover, I do anticipate that the majority of the information will be useful during final edits and rolling out a finished piece. The chapter contracts makes the book worthy of purchase.
