I bought a copy of this book at a gift shop at the Alhambra in fall 2010, read it on the train back from Granada. It was definitely a unique experience to read the book after visiting the setting itself.Irving relates some very interesting stories of his own experiences including humourous character sketches and sweeping scenery descriptions. Don't read this book like a tour book... obviously Spain has changed immensely since the time of its writing. Irving also collects some very interesting legends of the Moorish/Arabic community from Andalusia. His tale of the Legend of Prince Ahmed Kamel could be turned into a Disney movie with just a few musical numbers thrown in for good measure.Overall, a very enjoyable read!
Tales of the Alhambra was a beautiful read but I wish I had read it before visiting that glorious sight. Reading after our trip to Spain was very rewarding as well though. Tales of the Gate of Justice, the Court of Lions, and the Moors who created it and walked its halls were all amazing to read and pulled me back. Irvin blends history with myth to take the reader on an enchanted voyage through the history of Spain built through the clashes and mingling of the Moor and Christian traditions. It is a beautifully tragic collection of stories. Irvin's work is a very approachable read that truly makes the reader feel the glory of the palace, the country and its people
Washington Irving was once a really popular American author. Now he's almost forgotten. Except in Granada, Spain. He lived in the famous site of the Alhambra almost 200 years ago and wrote of his experiences there. He was a great lover of stories, and he includes in the book some of the stories and legends he was told there, tales of ghostly happenings, warriors imprisoned in caves for hundreds of years, betrayals and successes of the rich and the poor.If you ever plan to visit the Alhambra, do read this book. In Granada you can buy it in the original English, in Spanish, German, French and Italian. It's the perfect complement to this famous place.
If traveling to or having visited Granada in Andalusia, this collection of tales provides a lovely sidelight. Part travelogue, part collection of magic and romance from the "Moorish" days of Spain, "Tales of the Alhambra" will not substitute for a solid history (either of Andalus or post-re-conquest Spain), but, even if a bit too long, it is well worth the read. Washington Irving is one of the United States' first great writers and deservedly so. Steeped in the era of Romanticism and the sensibility of fantasy, Irving's powers of description and turn of phrase are wonderful, his English lucid and accessible.
This introduction to the Alhambra, one of the world's great architectural achievements, reads as if written recently. Its language is elegant, capturing for the contemporary reader a sense of the depth and mystery of its subject. One can read the volume as a guide in anticipation of a visit to the site or simply as a piece of literature to be appreciated in and for itself.
These tales are a view of the romantic, mystical aspect of the Alhambra. An interesting and amusing read before a visit as the room Washington Irving occupied is noted with a plaque and it is possible to identify aspects of the Alhambra he wrote about.
I bought this because we were planning a trip to southern Spain, including a visit to Alhambra. As it turned out, I was reading about Alhambra's various rooms while I was there. After learning about Alhambra, the remaining short stories were much more interesting and easier to visualize. This was a great bridge to a long ago place and time!
Ugh. The worst and the font is tiny.
