The threatening mood and aching sadness in this novel are suspense at its best. The reader is anxious to find out which of the overly friendly people might not be sincere. Events happen so quickly that it's no wonder the protagonist feels breathless. I had to chuckle at the reference to "butchering the English language" by the invention of the word "friended." I was impressed by Nancy Mehl's understanding of the way a child would react to loss. I chuckled when a conversation takes a sudden change in direction, leaving the male character unsure what just happened.Above all, though, I wrote down this quote to keep: "True humility is believing what God says about you." The reader is cautioned not to elevate beliefs (misconceptions) about oneself above faith in God's plan, and told that comparing oneself to others only leads to unhappiness.Having recently completed several of Mehl's Guideposts' Amish mysteries, I have added a new favorite writer to my long list. Nancy Mehl is versatile and her writing shines with true concern to impact the reader without being preachy. Bravo and thank you.
Fantastic! I enjoyed the first book in this series, Gathering Shadows, so much that I could hardly wait for the second book and hope that it was as good. I surely wasn’t disappointed! This book is set in the small town of Sanctuary, Missouri. This is a former conservative Mennonite town that is tucked away from the outside world and the members of this community like it that way. There are still several conservative Mennonite families, but now there are also contemporary or more modern families as well. This story focuses on Sarah Miller, the town’s school teacher.Sarah Miller must face some very unpleasant news right at the beginning of the story. Her sister Hannah has been found murdered, leaving her 10-year-old daughter an orphan. Sarah immediately claims her sister’s daughter, her niece Cicely, as her own. Upon hearing some of the details of her sister’s death from the detective in charge of the case, Sarah isn’t sure that Hannah’s death was the result of a burglary gone wrong. Sarah thinks Hannah was murdered. She enlists the help of the deputy Paul Gleason. Paul finds Sarah attractive, but he won’t act on his feelings until this case is settled. As Sarah comes to depend on Paul more and more, she wonders if they could have a future together. First, she must find her sister’s killer. However, Sarah is unprepared for the backlash that she unwittingly releases with her digging into the past. More people are killed, but Sarah refuses to give up.There is tension galore in this suspense-filled story. I couldn’t put the book down! I could readily identify with Sarah’s insecurities about herself, and I loved the moment of realization she understands how God created her to be the way she is. She discovers she has been putting her insecurities ahead of her faith in God. Just a great moment in the story! Paul also is a worthy man who puts Sarah and her welfare before his own. I can’t wait for the next one! Great job Nancy!!
I enjoy this second story in the Finding Sanctuary series very much. This is the third story I have read from Nancy Mehl and I truly am enjoying her stories. Sarah and her sister, Hannah, grew up without their parents who were murdered when the girls were just children. Paul Gleason from Book 1 makes another appearance and finds love with Sarah as he tries to help her solve the case when her sister is murdered. The only thing I missed in this story was I wondered if Paul should have had more of a role in the story and perhaps should have been around more. I didn’t get to know his character that well.
I think this has to be one of Nancy Mehl's best books yet! I love her writing and how she allows you to delve into the town and the characters' lives. I've read a lot of mysteries and watched a lot of crime shows, so I generally can guess who the villain is before it is time. But, this time I was still guessing up to the reveal. Another thing I really appreciated about this book was how relate-able the characters were. She captured the mind of a child who has been traumatized and the feelings and insecurities that an adult woman has when she finds herself stepping into the roll of mother to a motherless child. All the while, you find HOPE in the midst of tragedy, chaos, heartbreak and fear. Loved it!
I was so into this and guessing the whole way and I did pretty good if I might say so myself lolYou just cannot stop reading.The story is really good and the little romance thing going on was perfect.Good read
Very Exciting and dramatic story line. This Series in Sanctuary is a well written series. I will read on. The Characters are exciting and the story line is captivating.
Sanctuary doesn't always live up to its name, I'm afraid. But the residents are tenacious in resolving problems and putting theories to rest as truth slowly prevails. Another wonderful page turner that will keep you guessing until the very end. I'm anxious to see what unfolds in Book 3.
I loved this book. The plot was intriguing and interesting but was a little slow at times ! However the storyline still held my interest. The ending while great could have been a little more theatrical I would recommend it as a good read
