I found this book most interesting because it's somewhat unusually conceived, while being very thorough and well organized. I advise the reader to refer to all of the listed links, as well as further research, to get the most up-to-date information. The book, organized as it is around the topic of Mobile Web, is particularly useful as an introductory syllabus-guide and learning directory. I hope that it'll be updated soon, and frequently.
I believe this is an essential book by one of the experts in the field. I read it cover to cover (more or less, skimming certain parts), but more than that I will go back to it as a reference resource. My only "complaint" (why I did not give it full 5 stars) is the thoroughness of coverage of topics is somewhat inconsistent. It seems as if some topics got a lot of coverage based on availability of detailed information (because the sponsoring company or organization provides thorough documentation, probably), and not necessarily the importance.
I found this book easy to read, and very exciting to jump to the next section and read more, I am using this book with Head First for my mobile web development at college of San Mateo.I have the second edition and it is updated which saves you time to go and read extra articles..
This was an fairly easy-to-read book. I wanted an overview of mobile web development and I got it. A lot of history but thin on details. I also simultaneously picked up the same author's jquery mobile book a realized some copy-and-pasting going on. I really wanted to focus on the big two- apple and google aka iOS and android but also go a whole lot of phone history which I did not need. Again, a good overview. Now I am looking for more meat.
Lots of pages but not much programming
It's obvious that Firtman knows this subject through and through. Thanks for sharing it, so everybody else doesn't have to look all over the web for it.
Still trying to digest the material
Mobile web" is vast landscape. It has always been fragmented, with standards bodies pulling one way and browser developers trying to ignore them and do their own thing -- whether to stand out or to get that new release out the door quicker. A developer who wants their web site to work and look good on a wide variety of devices had to either be as conservative as possible (1990s-era HTML tends to look the same everywhere), or to buy a room full of mobile devices for testing. With Programming the Mobile Web, the author Maximiliano Firtman put his roomful of mobile devices through their paces. For designers, the book explains what can be done on today's devices. For developers, it explains what protocols and file formats are supported on which devices, what screen resolutions to expect, how to query for capabilities, and how to gracefully degrade functionality when certain features are not available. The coverage of protocols and file formats is impressive, going all the way back to WML and covering all the way up to HTML5, CSS 3, and modern Javascript libraries. It also covers HTML5 new features, including local storage, geolocation, and improved media support. However, this is not a programming book per se. The best way to treat this book is as a companion to web programming books like the classic JavaScript: The Definitive Guide. Programming for Mobile Web will tell you what to be aware of across a wide swath of devices to ensure a consistently reliable and pleasant user experience, and it'll guide you to make good design decisions. Then once you know what you want to do, programming books will see you through the implementation.
