I have read several of KJ Charles' books and enjoy her style. She does historical m/m romances really well.Here she gives us a unique character - Justin Lazarus, who is a true con artist. He's not pretending to be a spiritualist for a higher goal, he's pretending to be a spiritualist to pay the rent. I liked him a lot! He's cynical and frazzled and tired and very, very alone. When genuine mysterious matters and violence come to his door, there is no one he can really turn to - except, perhaps, Nathaniel Roy.Nathaniel Roy can be pure of heart and mind, because he has never gone hungry, always had the benefits of his class and education and first rate mind.Nathaniel and Justin meet and clash and meet and have explosive sex and then meet and get to know each other. I very enjoyed this book.I bought it thinking it's the first in the series, but it was the second. However the back story, although a bit dense, is perfectly understandable. So while it's probably better to read in order, it's not essential.

This trilogy is excellent. Each of the three books focuses on a different relationship, as well as the unfolding mystery regarding the twins, their parentage, and who is trying to control the succession to the earldom.This author loves to explore dichotomies in partnerships. She likes to pair two men who are very different, often of different classes, different backgrounds; in this particular case, also very different moral views of the world. She has a real gift for illuminating the worlds in which she sets her stories through all these different perspectives. She is also particularly gifted at illuminating, accurately and in a well researched way, the periods in which her books are set. The struggles that her characters go through to find a way to live lives of love and fulfillment despite sexualities not excepted, in fact illegal, in the times and places in which they live, are fascinating to me. Also, poignant.Now that I’ve read all three books in the series, I’m blown away by how different, unique, and sympathetic each couple is, how tautly drawn the mystery is, and how well the setting is done.The Victorian period Is my personal favorite and my academic specialty. Victorian spiritualism is fascinating, hilarious, and well done here. I can’t recommend these three books highly enough.I will point out that none of them work as a standalone. You do need to read all three of them. I also want to mention that the Audible perfomance is absolutely, completely, totally fantastic..

This book did not begin as a 5 star read but I ended up a completely satisfied reader. Nathaniel and Justin have such disdain for each other at the outset of the story and their first sexual encounter is not romantic at all. In the hands of a lesser writer I doubt that their HEA could have been made believable.But this is K J Charles, who is so skilled at creating an authentic sense of time and place while presenting characters who are anything but cookie-cutter. Both Nathaniel and Justin have a background that makes their attitudes realistic. The mysterious events in which they are caught up give them both time to get to know the man beneath the surface and we see them becoming emotionally intimate as danger swirls around them. By the end of the book the strength of their feelings is revealed through their actions as much as by the declarations they make to each other.The overarching mystery that began in the previous book is continued here, with new villains introduced and dealt with. There is still suspense left over for the trilogy's concluding book but this part of the series feels complete enough.Having now read the whole series my verdict is that this is by far the best of it from a romance point of view, and Justin is my favourite of all its heroes. He is a prickly but razor-sharp and steals every scene he is in.

It is easy, I think, for our modern minds to forget just how awful life was for people with no family, money, or connections in Victorian England, especially London. Justin Lazarus is an amazing man, having pulled himself up by his bootstraps (without having any boots to speak of). He is a person with spikes around him, and he has reason to be so. He lives in a very carefully constructed way because his life could fall down around him at any moment, leaving him literally in the gutter, begging. For all of that, it would be easy for him to end up as a one note man, and he does not. He is well sculpted, and I like him very much.Nathaniel Roy isn't any easier of a character to like, to be honest. He's judgmental, rigid, and has that kind of blithe blindness that only people born to privilege have. He gives impossible advice, things like, "Just do something else with your life", and expects that it could be that easy. To his credit, he is steadfast, tenacious and strong, which is what makes any of this work at all.Together, they are an explosive mix of lust and need, and their relationship is brutal in its honesty. I think the author has done a good thing by making it impossible to resolve their differences by Roy simply giving Lazarus money to become a better person. It's awful, but wonderful at the same time, and I love them as a couple, just as I love them as separate characters.The actual story-line is interwoven through this, and it is terrifying and mysterious. It picks up where An Unseen Attraction (Sins of the Cities) leaves off, with the mystery that only seems to be ramping up in urgency. It is frightening and fast paced in some spots, and then gets sort of slow again to give you breath, and then picks up in pace towards the end again. I think it would be easy to have this become a secondary attraction to the romance, but it isn't, and I'm just as interested to know what's going to happen with this as I am in the next couple the author will highlight in the next book.On top of all of this, is the incredibly well researched Victorian Spiritualist stuff, which I applaud. Lazarus is interesting for his skills at Hot and Cold reading, physical manipulation and sheer bald faced lying. I think these things are what put people off about him, but to me they make him compelling; making enough of a living to keep yourself and three other people from starvation by these kinds of wits was dangerous and hard. He's simply stunning.The tricks used here are classic, and if you care to read about them, KJ Charles has helpfully provided a number of places to do this in the back of the book. I appreciate that she did not tell us how most of the tricks were done, and I think if you look them up, you'll be astounded at how easy they are. If you look further, you can see that some of these things are still being used today.Read it! I think I'm going to go do that very thing for a second time.
